Thermoplastic polyolefin (TPO) has been used in passenger cars, and its weight ratio to whole polymeric materials is approximately 50% in a car. Japan is leading the development of TPO now. How is Japan in the leading position of this field? Where shall we go? This workshop provides you an opportunity to consider the future of TPO at the view point of resin manufactures and a car manufacturer.

   TPO has been used in variety of automotive applications such as the soft skin of interior parts and glass-fiber reinforced structural materials. Even though polypropylene is a main component of TPO, composite technology drastically changes properties of final products. We review the development history, and then, consider the future direction of automotive TPO.

   Polypropylene is one of main materials in passenger cars and is applied in many products from thin large parts such as a bumper fascia and an instrument panel to rigid structural parts such as a module carrier. This lecture describes recent technical trend related to car body including exteriors and interiors and expectation to technical progress in this field.

Since Montecatini has succeeded the world's first commercial production of polypropylene in 1957, global polypropylene demand is rapidly growing and over 60 million ton in a year. New developed production technology has allowed the growth and has expanded not only productivity but also application and properties of polypropylene products. I show you the history and current achievement of catalyst and process in polypropylene production.

Rubber toughened Polypropylene (TPO) has been widely used in automotive applications due to its low density, excellent mechanical properties and superior cost/ performance balance. In this workshop, I would like to introduce polyolefin elastomers (POEs) from the following viewpoints; 1)Basic of thermoplastic elastomers, 2)Major applications, 3)Requirements of TPOs from Automotive applications, 4)TPO properties by POE structures, 5)New POEs and their automotive applications.
